Plex Rolls Out Movie and TV Show Reviews on Its Streaming Platform
Following its $40 million fundraise at the beginning of this year, streaming media company Plex announced on Wednesday that it’s rolling out a new TV show and movie reviews feature. This move puts its app in more direct competition with other apps like Letterboxd and TV Time.
A New Era for Streaming Communities
The feature will also include social networking elements, as the reviews can be shared with your friends on Plex and even friends of friends. This latest release builds on the existing framework established by the "Discover Together" feature, which was launched last year. Discover Together allowed users to create profiles on the app, find and follow friends to discover new movies and shows together.
Sharing Reviews: A Social Experience
Users can share their reviews with others through the app’s social networking features. Initially, reviews will only be shared within a user’s network of friends and their friends. However, Plex is working on an update that will allow users to share their ratings and reviews with anyone on the service.
Getting Started with Reviews
To access the new feature, users will need a verified email address to get started. They can then create their reviews from either the web interface or the mobile apps. To review items from the Personal Media library, users will need to enable the "Sync Watch State & Ratings" feature.
Customizing Your Review Experience
Plex users will be able to control which reviews they’ll see when on movie and show detail pages by accessing a new "Ratings and Reviews" option under Account settings. From here, users can choose to see reviews from Plex users and critics, users only, critics only, or from no one.
Review Guidelines and Privacy Settings
Reviews will need to abide by Plex’s existing Community Guidelines. Users can control who sees their reviews by choosing between Private, Friends (which is the default), and Friends of Friends. Plex users’ existing privacy settings will be preserved, ensuring that they won’t inadvertently share embarrassing viewing habits with friends and family.
A Step Forward in Social Networking
Plex’s entry into the social networking space marks a significant step forward for the company. By incorporating reviews and ratings into its app, Plex aims to create a more engaging experience for users. With its growing user base and increasing popularity, Plex is now competing directly with other apps like Letterboxd and TV Time.
What’s Next?
Plex is seeking beta testers for the new feature. Users who are interested in participating can sign up through the company’s website. The rollout of this new feature marks an exciting development in the world of streaming media, as companies continue to innovate and push boundaries in the industry.
